Our M.A.D.D. week parade!

Last Friday (13th July) year 6 took part in our school M.A.D.D. week parade. M.A.D.D. stands for Music, Art, Dance and Drama – all of our lessons over the previous week were focused on these subjects.

Each class across the school focused on a different country – Miss Herron’s class focused on Brazil and Mr. Heeley’s class focused on the USA.

Here you can see Miss Herron’s class performing their amazing Samba dance and Mr. Heeley’s class during the parade.

Beamish!

8 people from year 6 who have achieved special things this school year were rewarded with a trip to the Beamish museum in Durham last week. Beamish is not like a normal museum as it is outdoors and includes a 19th century town with a real sweet shop! We also spent some time in a Victorian school and went down a coal mine. The area where we live in north-east England was a very famous coal mining area until quite recently. We found the day really interesting.

Edinburgh

Last Thursday we had an amazing adventure in the capital city of Scotland – Edinburgh. We left Newcastle early in the morning at the early time of 7:00am! We travelled on a train  to Edinburgh it took 1 hour and 40 minutes. When we arrived we visited Edinburgh Castle. We made friends with some American tourists! At 1pm we watched the castle cannon get fired.

After our visit to the castle we walked down the Royal Mile and spent some time in the shops. We spent our money on some unusual things including a Loch Ness monster hat and some Edinburgh Rock! Later on we had a lovely Pizza Hut buffet – we ate loads of Pizza between us!

Finally it was time to head back to Newcastle on the train but there was a problem! A huge storm had caused a landslide on to the train track. We had no other way of getting home and we thought we might have to stay the night in Edinburgh (which would have been fun!). A kind police man sorted a coach out for us and we travelled back by road – it took nearly 3 hours because of the weather.

We had a great day! What an adventure!

Joe represents Newcastle in the hurdles!

Joe from year 6 had a very busy Saturday morning this weekend as he had qualified to represent Newcastle in the North East Schools Athletics Championships at Gateshead International Stadium.

He was taking part in the 60 metre hurdles event and in his first race qualified for the final. This meant he is officially in the top 8 year 6 boy hurdlers in the north east of England – a fantastic achievement – well done Joe!

Team Hilton!

Today all of year 6 had a great morning out at the Newcastle Schools Athletics Championships at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow, near Newcastle.

Several of our year 6′s took part in events including sprinting, long distance running, high jump, long jump, throwing, hurdles and relay against some of the best school athletes in the city.

Hilton Rocks!

There some great individual performances and the support from our other year 6′s was fantastic! Special mentions should go to Joe H and Kieran P who finished 5th in the hurdles and sprint respectively. Also, Sasha R should be credited for picking herself up and continuing her race after a nasty fall in the hurdles.

Everyone in year 6 represented Hilton superbly and a great morning was capped off as we passed the new Olympic rings on the Tyne Bridge – all set for the Olympic torch replay which will visit our city on Friday!
